“Continuous improvement” is a term often used to describe the sustainability pathway advocated by members of Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture. The term also applies to the work of committees seeking to continuously improve the Field to Market sustainability platform and draw attention to the work of the organization.
Field to Market committees gathered for face-to-face meetings in Washington, D.C., last week, where NACD was represented by Director of Development Melisa Augusto and Communications Specialist Bill Berry. Augusto is a member of the Field to Market Awards and Recognition Committee, and Berry is a member of the Verification Committee.
Field to Market is a diverse group of grower organizations, agribusinesses, food and beverage retail companies, conservation groups, universities, and public sector partners. It focuses on defining, measuring, and advancing the sustainability of food, fiber, and fuel production. By 2020, Field to Market seeks to engage 20 percent of U.S. acres in commodity crop production through its supply chain sustainability program.
“It is exciting to work with representatives of various sectors on developing a top-notch sustainability platform,” Berry said. “NACD is able to provide expertise on the needs of producers, and how conservation planning and conservation practices can be successfully implemented on the ground.” The Verification Committee is charged with making recommendations to the Field to Market Board of Directors on establishing and revising participation, measurement, and impact claims protocols. The committee also oversees engagement with third-party verifiers and ensures ongoing compliance efforts.
“On the Awards and Recognition committee, NACD represents the conservation sector and the men and women across this country that put conservation practices to use,” Augusto said. The committee is developing awards and recognition programs for Field to Market members and growers and value-added opportunities to help accelerate grower adoption of sustainable practices.
