Action Requested
Date: October 15, 2007
Subject: Conservation Call-In Day, October 17
Contact your Senators this Wednesday in support of conservation programs in the 2007 Farm Bill.
Background
This Wednesday, October 17, a coalition of environmental and wildlife organizations will be making Farm Bill contacts to the U.S. Senate. This is your opportunity to join in an effort with other organizations to urge support for strong conservation programs in the 2007 Farm Bill. NACD must continue to voice our message of opposition to proposals to change conservation program administration in the Farm Bill, and support funding for a strong conservation title. The Senate Agriculture Committee has tentatively scheduled mark-up for October 23, so Wednesday will be an important day for a show of force in support of a strong conservation title.
Talking Points
Below are some talking points for Wednesday's call:
Program Administration
- NACD opposes any reorganization of program administration in the 2007 Farm Bill (for background, see the September 13, 2007 Action Alert on our website: http://www.nacdnet.org/policy/action/alert_09-13-07.phtml)
Conservation Funding
- Any savings from modifications to conservation programs should remain in the conservation title
- Additional funding for Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), grasslands program, stewardship incentive payments and other major conservation programs must be included in the 2007 Farm Bill to ensure that these programs continue over the next five years
- Retain the funding commitment to conservation programs provided in the 2002 Farm Bill, but look for opportunities to streamline and improve efficiency within the current program options
