National Association of Conservation Districts
NACD's mission is to serve conservation districts by providing national leadership and a unified voice for natural resource conservation.
U&C Conservation at the State Level
There are a number of ways that districts can coordinate at the state level to work more effectively in the urban and community areas. Listed below are both examples of what some states are currently doing and suggestions of additional opportunities.
- Establish a "community conservation" committee or task force at the state level, within the state association or partnership. Invite district officials, district employees and partners from districts that are experienced in these areas and districts that are just becoming involved. Both offer valuable perspectives.
- State example: North Carolina
- Showcase districts’ community conservation activities in state publications and website, and share with national association.
- State example: Indiana
- Conduct community conservation information, training and networking sessions at state annual and area meetings.
- Initiate regular meetings, invite to district events, and establish MOUs with the state agencies and entities responsible for the following programs:
- Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council (state forester’s office)
- Stormwater Management (state water quality agency)
- Smart Growth (separate office in some states)
- Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council (state forester’s office)
Note: States are assisting their districts with urban and community conservation in many more ways. Share what your state is doing with Debra Bogar at deb-bogar@nacdnet.org.
