Empowering the First Cohort of the Working Lands Climate Corps

The inaugural cohort of the Working Lands Climate Corps (WLCC) gathered virtually on October 8, 2024, to receive guidance and encouragement as they prepare to embark on their journey into environmental service.

The WLCC is an initiative that aims to engage 126 young leaders in states across the country, working with 28 different public and private organizations, including conservation districts, state associations, Pheasants Forever, Monarch Joint Venture, Ducks Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, and more. Young leaders will work with these organizations to address critical issues related to land management and climate change.

“This is a program designed for helping others and helping yourselves,” said Sandy Scott, Senior Advisor to the CEO at AmeriCorps.

Meeting organizers emphasized the importance of taking risks and embracing new opportunities. With a robust support network available to members throughout their term of service, the cohort members are not entering into this endeavor alone. This sentiment fostered a sense of camaraderie, reminding members they are part of a larger mission dedicated to sustainability and conservation.

Organizers highlighted the roles of the cohort members and the organizations leading the WLCC: The Corps Network, American Climate Corps, Conservation Legacy, NRCS, and NACD. NACD is supporting the education of cohort members, providing a platform for community and education with special live speakers and skill workshops to prepare cohort members as they step into their careers.

WLCC organizers expressed gratitude to the inaugural cohort members for their dedication to environmental service. The cohort’s willingness to step into these new roles reflects a strong commitment to making a difference in their communities and the broader ecological landscape. The WLCC organizers recognize the vital role these young leaders will play in tackling challenges related to land management and climate change, both in the future and during their service term, during which they will provide significant contributions to local ecosystems and national conservation efforts.

The WLCC aspires to cultivate a generation of informed and passionate individuals who are ready to confront environmental issues head-on. With a solid foundation of support and resources, this inaugural cohort is well-equipped to make a meaningful impact.

As members prepare to begin their service, they carry the knowledge shared during the meeting and a sense of purpose and community. With the backing of peers, supervisors, and a larger network of conservation organizations, they are poised to embrace challenges confidently.

The Working Lands Climate Corps represents a career opportunity for cohort members and a vital contribution to the future of working lands and climate resilience. As members engage in hands-on projects and collaborate with stakeholders, they will gain invaluable experience while fostering sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and their communities. Some members of the cohort will also be eligible for the Segal Education Award of $6,895 to be used to repay student loans or continue their education after the program.

The inaugural cohort of the WLCC stands at the threshold of a significant journey. With a commitment to collaboration, continuous learning, and active engagement in environmental stewardship, these young leaders are prepared to make a lasting mark on the landscape of conservation and climate action. The future is bright as they step forward to make a difference, one initiative at a time.
