Association of Florida Conservation Districts

There are 56 Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Florida, all organized by local people for the purpose of promoting and encouraging the wise use, management and general conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources. Local soil and water conservation districts depend on the Association of Florida Conservation District (AFCD) and the National Association of Florida Conservation Districts for leadership and coordination in natural resource conservation endeavors. Both agencies are nonprofit organizations. AFCD operates under the direction of its elected governing body and provides information and support services to soil and water conservation districts throughout the state.

The NCF-Envirothon, a program of the National Conservation Foundation (NCF), is an international environmental and natural resource problem-solving, teambuilding and leadership experience for high school students (grades 9-12 or ages 14-19) in the United States, Canada and China. Incorporating STEM principles, hands-on learning and outdoor field experiences, the Envirothon program encourages students to expand their knowledge and explore conservation in the areas of Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soils and Land Use, Wildlife, and Current Environmental Issues.
Students, working collaboratively as a team, can be found getting their hands dirty in a soil pit, measuring the basal area of a tree, collecting macroinvertebrates in a stream to determine water quality, identifying wildlife signs and many other activities used by natural resource professionals day-to-day. Students interact and learn directly from leading professionals, introducing students to a wide array of higher academic study and career opportunities in environmental, natural resource and conservation fields.”
